Elon Musk’s X platform is rolling out a new messaging feature called Xchat APK. It offers end-to-end encryption, disappearing messages, and the ability to send any file. Elon Musk announced the feature, which is available to beta testers, in a series of posts on the platform on Sunday.
“The new XChat is launching with encryption, disappearing messages, and the ability to send any file,” Musk said. He added that audio and video calls will also be available. According to him, Elon Musk XChat’s distinguishing features are its use of “Bitcoin-like encryption” and its entirely new architecture based on the Rust programming language.
The feature appears to be a significant improvement over X’s existing Direct Messages (DM) and comes just days after the company discontinued encrypted messaging. In a brief update on May 29, X announced that it would temporarily shut down the feature to “make some improvements,” hinting at more significant changes to come. It now appears that XChat was stalled even before its launch.
Although X has yet to publish an official blog post or detailed FAQ about the new feature, reverse engineering expert and app researcher Nemo Oji has been following the development. On April 18, Oji shared a screenshot showing an “invisible mode” in XChat that makes messages disappear with a delay of five minutes to a day.
