What is Lachit Borphukan APK?

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the closing ceremony of the 400th birth anniversary of Ahom General Lachit Borphukan APK in New Delhi. Speaking to the media, Sarma said that the Assam government will organize several programs in the capital from November 23 to 25, which will be attended by dignitaries from all walks of life.

It is regarded as one of the most notable generals of the Ahom state. He is known for leading the Battle of Saraighat on the Brahmaputra River in 1671, in which he thwarted a long-standing attempt by the Mughal army led by Raja Ram Singh I to recapture Assam. To mark the 400th birth anniversary of the great Ahom general, the Assam government launched a mobile app and a web portal last month.

This portal and mobile application allow citizens of Assam and beyond, including those from abroad, to express their gratitude to Lachit Borphukan through articles and writings.

Battle of Saraighat:

In the summer of 1667, Lachit gathered his army and completed his preparations. His army recaptured Guwahati from the Mughal army. After the defeat at Guwahati, Emperor Aurangzeb (born November 3, 1618) dispatched an expedition from Dhaka under the leadership of Ram Singh. Since the Ahom army was outnumbered and technologically inferior, Lachit relied on guerrilla tactics to defeat the Mughal army.

Realizing that the retreat of the Ahom commander would facilitate defeat, Ram Singh resorted to deception. The Ahom camp was attacked based on a letter from Ram Singh. Chakradhwaj Singh later received this letter. According to the letter, Lachit received 100,000 rupees to leave Guwahati. When his general was accused of negotiating with the enemy, the enraged king began to doubt his sincerity. But his prime minister, Atan Buragoha, convinced him of a Mughal plot to overthrow the hitherto successful general Chakradhwaj Singh.

Having exhausted all other options, Ram Singh crossed the Brahmaputra and reached Guwahati in 1671. At Saraighat, he encountered an Ahom fleet led by Lachit Borphukan. In the open field, the Ahom army gradually lost its will to fight due to its numerical inferiority and the superiority of its opponents' weapons. Lachit saw that some of the soldiers were retreating and boarded a boat to retrieve them. Despite serious illness, Lachit's army rallied, and a fierce battle began on the Brahmaputra.

Lachit: Vijaya Gatha

Born on November 24, 1622, in Charaideo, Assam, Lachit was the younger son of Sukuti (also known as Momai-Tamuli), a general of Assam during the Ahom-Mughal wars under the Mughal emperors Jahangir and Shah Jahan. Under the rule of Swargadev (king), the Ahom kingdom (1228–1826) was ruled by five high officials, the Patra Mantri (council of ministers).

Sukuti (Momai-Tamuli) endured many hardships and initially worked for his nephew on a salary of only four rupees, whom he affectionately called Momai (uncle). Swargadev Pratap Singh (1603–1641), who recognized Sukuti's honesty and loyalty, appointed him as the keeper of the Bar-Tamuli (Royal Gardens). Momai-Tamuli's position gradually increased until he was appointed as the Barbarua. He also held the roles of the country's Chief Executive Officer and Lord Chief Justice. In the early wars against the Mughals, he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the Ahom army.

His alertness and courage were invaluable to Swargadev Pratap Singh. A Mughal ambassador once said to his master, "O Sahib, what is your opinion about Assam? The king is an incarnation of Mahadev, and Momai-Tamuli is his chief servant, O Nandi. As long as these two manage the affairs of Assam, it will be impossible for this country to turn its back on them." This extraordinary commitment, loyalty and respect for his master gave Momai-Tamuli strength and importance.

Lachit inherited his father's high sense of responsibility and loyalty. From an early age, he saw and heard every event that took place at his father's official residence. As a barbarian, Momai-Tamuli always employed subordinate officials to assist him in running the state, settling taxes and legal disputes, receiving foreign envoys and handling diplomatic matters.

Ahom noble families employed qualified teachers to educate their children. Pandits and intellectuals were regularly consulted, who taught statecraft based on Ahom Shastri texts, Dandan and Hindu Arthashastras, and imparted knowledge of the country's history and administrative system. Military training was an integral part of the education of noble families.

Every officer, even judges and priests, was expected to carry weapons in case of emergency. Lachit started his career as the Prime Minister's Dupatta Holder, a position equivalent to a private secretary. This position was considered the first step on the path to a budding diplomat's and politician's career. As a dupatta holder, he was expected to keep supari and essential documents for his lord.

He also had access to royal assemblies and cabinet meetings. Lachit held various positions during his reign. Initially, he was the Chief Inspector of the Royal Horses, Ghoda Barua. Later, he was appointed as the Chief Inspector of the Guards, Dolakshari Barua.

Shortly after he acceded to the throne, Swargdev Chakradhwaj Singh (1663–1670) appointed Lachit as a general and Borphukan. The Borphukan had executive and judicial powers, and his jurisdiction extended to the Ahom kingdom west of the Kaliabor River. The Borphukan was also responsible for diplomatic relations with Bengal and Bhutan.
